Convert between square metres, square kilometres, hectares, acres and square feet. Free area converter.
Select the source and target area units.
Convert between square millimetres, square centimetres, square metres, square kilometres, hectares, acres and square feet.
Enter a value and choose the current and target units. Hectares and acres are both included for land and gardens.
Result = value × (m² in source unit ÷ m² in target unit)
100 m² ≈ 1,076.39 ft².
The result keeps up to six decimals. Use the table to see typical equivalents without typing again.
Converting length units and expecting area to follow. Doubling the side of a square multiplies its area by four, not two.
Area is where unit systems collide hardest, because two dimensions multiply and every factor appears squared. A garden is listed in hectares or acres, a flat in square metres, a house in square feet, and a plot on a survey map in any of them. This page converts across square millimetres, square centimetres, square metres, square kilometres, hectares, acres and square feet, and anchors the answer in the unit the reader's own listing or quote was written in — which is where comparisons stop wobbling.
The core anchors are few and stable. One metre is 10.7639 square feet at the squared length: 1 m² = 10.76391041671 ft² to be exact. One hectare is 10,000 m². One acre is 4,046.8564224 m², so a hectare is about 2.471054 acres. Everything else on the page is division or multiplication against those anchors.
Problem: a plot listing says 0.25 acres. Your fencing supplier quotes per square metre. What area are you actually fencing?
The ordering matters more than any single number: anchor first, multiply second, sanity-check against a familiar yardstick. A plot this size is occasionally mis-quoted by a factor of two when listing platforms mix metres with feet, and the anchor check is what catches it.
| Flat size (m²) | Same area in ft² | Read |
|---|---|---|
| 80 m² | 861.112833 | A compact two-bedroom |
| 100 m² | 1,076.391042 | The benchmark flat most buyers compare |
| 120 m² | 1,291.669250 | A family floor plate |
| 1 ha (10,000 m²) | 107,639.104167 | A city block's worth of interior space |
The benchmark row is the one worth memorising: 100 m² is a fraction over 1,076 ft², and every other listing size scales linearly from it — 80 m² is 20% less on both sides of the conversion, at the same precision.
Land units are the one place this page bends the pattern: hectares and acres are anchors in their own right, not interchange steps. When a council plots a park in hectares and a listing quotes perches or other local relics, remember the historical definitions: an acre was the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day, and a hectare is a modern metric square of 100 m sides. Both persist because tenure law persists; the tool converts whichever you were handed into whichever your reader uses.
One hectare is 10,000 square metres.
One acre is about 4,046.86 square metres.
0.25 × 4,046.8564224 = 1,011.714106 m² — a quarter of the acre anchor, or about 10,890 ft².
A hectare is 10,000 m² and equals 2.471054 acres; swapping the two names moves land estimates by a factor of 2.47, not a rounding difference.
Area squares every linear factor: a garden twice the side is four times the area (100 m² becomes 400 m²), which is why double-the-size plans underbuy fencing by half.
100 × 10.76391041671 = 1,076.391042 ft² — the benchmark row that most listing comparisons scale from.
