Convert miles or kilometres into steps, or foot steps into distance, using your own stride length. Free miles to steps converter.
Set your stride length for a personal result; 76.2 cm is a common starting value.
Convert between distance and footsteps using your own stride length. A 76.2 cm stride gives exactly 2,112 steps per mile.
Choose the direction, enter the value, set the unit and your stride length in centimetres.
Steps = distance ÷ stride; distance = steps × stride
3 miles at a 76.2 cm stride is exactly 6,336 steps; 10,000 steps is 7.62 km, about 4.73 miles.
For steps to distance you get miles or kilometres plus how many steps that unit holds at your stride.
Copying a friend's stride. A 10 cm difference changes steps per mile by hundreds.
Fitness bands count footsteps; maps speak in miles; the conversion between the two runs through one personal number your device rarely knows: stride length. This page converts either way — steps into miles or kilometres, and distance back into steps — using the stride you supply. The famous round numbers are inherited, not measured: a 76.2 cm stride gives exactly 2,112 steps per mile, which is where textbook figures like "a mile is about 2,000 steps" come from.
Stride is worth measuring once. Walk a known distance — a hallway, ten pavement slabs, a track straight — count your strides, divide distance by strides, and enter the result in centimetres. The default 76.2 cm is a fair start for many adults, but a 10 cm difference between two walkers moves steps per mile by hundreds, which turns one person's 10,000-step day into another's half marathon.
Both directions of the same walk, at a 76.2 cm stride:
There is an imperial footnote behind the roundness: 76.2 cm is exactly 30 inches, and 2,112 steps per mile follows from it without any rounding. Personal strides are never that neat, and the panel prints the honest decimal.
| Stride (cm) | Steps per mile | Steps per km |
|---|---|---|
| 60 | 2,682 | 1,667 |
| 70 | 2,299 | 1,429 |
| 76.2 | 2,112 | 1,312 |
| 81 | 1,987 | 1,235 |
| 91 | 1,769 | 1,099 |
The table is also a warning about borrowed goals: a shorter walker hits 10,000 steps across 6 km while a taller one covers 9.1 km for the same count. Step-count challenges between friends are only fair once both sides know their own row.
Walking and running strides differ — running typically lengthens the stride well past the walking figure — so a distance measured walking underestimates the steps of a run over the same ground, and vice versa. Measure each mode the way you will use it: ten strides along a straight, divided by the distance, entered in centimetres. The tool takes the one number you measured and is exact about it; the mode-switch is your honesty, not its arithmetic.
Many adults land between 70 and 82 cm walking; measure yours by walking ten strides and dividing the distance by ten.
Yes. Running strides are typically longer than walking strides, so enter a running measurement for running distances.
At the default 76.2 cm stride: 6,336 steps exactly, since one mile holds 2,112 steps of that length.
7.62 km at the 76.2 cm stride — about 4.73 miles. Your own measured stride re-answers the question personally.
Many adults fall between 70 and 82 cm walking. Measure once — distance ÷ strides over a known stretch — and use your own number.
Yes, running strides are typically longer, so enter a running-measured stride for run distances or the count will overstate.
