Compare Devine, Robinson and Miller ideal weight formulas plus the healthy BMI range for your height. For information only.
Formulas assume an average adult frame; ranges overlap.
Compare classic ideal-weight formulas for your height and see the healthy BMI band. The formulas differ by design, so the band they form is the real answer.
Choose the equation and enter your height in centimetres.
Devine (male): 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60); female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
At 180 cm the formulas give about 75.0 kg (Devine), 72.6 kg (Robinson) and 71.5 kg (Miller), with a healthy BMI band of roughly 59.9 to 80.7 kg.
Three formula weights plus the BMI-based band tell you where estimates cluster for your height.
Treating one formula's number as a prescription. Health factors outweigh any single figure.
Three classic formulas, one height, three different answers: that disagreement is the point of this page. Devine, Robinson and Miller were derived from different populations for different purposes, and none of them is a prescription. What they do provide is a cluster, and the healthy BMI band gives the range around it.
Use it to sanity-check a target you have been given, to understand why two charts disagree, or to see how wide the healthy range actually is at your height. It is not for children, and it says nothing about body composition.
Height is converted to inches. Devine: 50 + 2.3 × (inches − 60) for men, 45.5 + 2.3 × (inches − 60) for women. Robinson: 52 + 1.9 × (inches − 60) for men, 49 + 1.7 × for women. Miller: 56.2 + 1.41 × (inches − 60) for men, 53.1 + 1.36 × for women. All three are linear in height above five feet.
The band is separate: weight at BMI 18.5 to 24.9, which is 18.5 × height² to 24.9 × height² with height in metres. It is wider than any single formula because it is a range, not a point.
A man 180 cm tall.
The three formulas span 3.5 kg, while the band spans more than 20. That ratio is the most honest thing the page shows.
| Male height | Devine | Robinson | Miller | BMI band |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 160 cm | 56.9 kg | 57.7 kg | 60.4 kg | 47.4–63.7 kg |
| 170 cm | 65.9 kg | 65.2 kg | 66.0 kg | 53.5–72.0 kg |
| 180 cm | 75.0 kg | 72.6 kg | 71.5 kg | 59.9–80.7 kg |
| 190 cm | 84.0 kg | 80.1 kg | 77.1 kg | 66.8–89.9 kg |
At 165 cm the female formulas give 56.9 kg (Devine), 57.4 kg (Robinson) and 59.8 kg (Miller), with a band of 50.4 to 67.8 kg.
They were built from different populations and choices. None is the 'correct' weight; the cluster they form is the useful message.
Not necessarily. Body composition and frame shift the sweet spot inside the band.
No. Children are assessed with age-based growth charts by a professional.
75.0 kg (Devine), 72.6 kg (Robinson) and 71.5 kg (Miller), with a healthy BMI band of 59.9 to 80.7 kg.
56.9 kg (Devine), 57.4 kg (Robinson) and 59.8 kg (Miller), with a band of 50.4 to 67.8 kg.
They were built from different populations with different constants. The spread of about 3.5 kg at 180 cm is normal.
Not necessarily. The band spans over 20 kg at 180 cm, and body composition decides where inside it you sit.
No. Under 18 the reference is an age-and-sex growth chart, interpreted by a professional.
