Work out the area of a rectangle in square metres, feet and yards, with an optional price per square metre. Free area calculator.
Enter length and width in the unit you choose.
Find the area of a rectangular room, plot or wall panel in square metres, square feet and square yards, with an optional price per square metre.
Type length and width in a chosen unit and, if useful, a price per square metre.
Area = length × width, converted to metres first; 1 m² ≈ 10.7639 ft²
A room 5 m by 4 m is 20 m², about 215.28 ft² or 23.92 yd².
The headline is square metres, with square feet and yards and the perimeter underneath.
Using diagonal distances as sides, or mixing centimetres with metres in the same query.
Flooring, turf, membrane, roofing felt and paint all start with the same question: how big is this rectangle? This page takes a length and a width in the unit you actually measured in — metres, feet, inches, yards or centimetres — and returns the area in square metres, square feet and square yards, plus the perimeter.
It also prices the job when you enter a cost per square metre, which is how flooring and tiling are usually quoted. The area is for a rectangle; an L-shaped room needs to be split into two rectangles and added by hand.
Both dimensions are converted to metres first: one foot is 0.3048 m, one inch 0.0254 m, one yard 0.9144 m and one centimetre 0.01 m. Area = length × width in metres. One square metre is 10.7639 square feet and 1.19599 square yards, and the perimeter is 2 × (length + width) in metres.
Converting to metres before multiplying is what stops the classic error of mixing a centimetre with a metre inside the same rectangle.
A room 5 m by 4 m.
At 25 per square metre the same floor costs 500.00, which is the figure the optional price field adds.
| Dimensions | Square feet | Square metres |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ft × 12 ft | 120 ft² | 11.148 m² |
| 12 ft × 12 ft | 144 ft² | 13.378 m² |
| 20 ft × 10 ft | 200 ft² | 18.581 m² |
| 5 m × 4 m | 215.28 ft² | 20 m² |
One square foot is 0.0929 m², so a 120 ft² room lands just above eleven square metres — a useful check when a quote switches units.
No. Enter both dimensions in the same unit to keep the result correct.
Split the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add the areas yourself.
The optional price uses the square metre, the usual quoting unit here; convert your quote first if it is per square foot.
215.28 ft², from 20 × 10.7639. In square yards the same floor is 23.92.
11.148 m²: 120 ft² × 0.0929. In feet the area is simply 120 ft².
500.00, from 20 × 25. Add a wastage margin before ordering the material.
No. Convert both sides to the same unit first, or the area will be wrong by a factor of a hundred.
Not directly. Split the room into rectangles, calculate each area and add them together.
