What this calculator assumes about your course

It does two jobs: combine the scores you already have into a weighted average, and back-solve the score you need on a final exam to land a target. The maths assumes one thing worth checking against your syllabus: that every graded item has a percentage weight, and that the final's weight is separate from the list you type in. If your course drops the lowest quiz, curves exam scores, or grades part of the course on a pass/fail basis, adjust for those rules first — no calculator can read your syllabus for you.

Precision tips: enter weights as plain numbers (40, not 0.40), one item per line, and ignore any item not yet graded. The score you need can legally exceed 100 — that is not a bug, it is useful information that the target may need renegotiating or an extra-credit plan.

A worked example, step by step

Problem: so far, midterms scored 92 under a 40% weight, problem sets 78 under 30%, and a lab 88 under 10%. The final is worth 20%. Target grade: 85.

1. Weighted sum: 92×40 + 78×30 + 88×10 = 3,680 + 2,340 + 880 = 6,900.
2. Divide by the weight entered: 6,900 ÷ 80 = 86.25 — your standing before the final.
3. Target equation: 86.25×0.80 + F×0.20 = 85.
4. Isolate the final: F = (85 − 69) ÷ 0.20 = 80.0.
5. Conclusion: score 80.00 on the final and the course average is exactly 85.

The same list run at a target of 90 needs (90 − 69) ÷ 0.20 = 105 — above the ceiling, so grade forgiveness now comes only from extra credit or a syllabus exception.

A typical course weight split

Common undergraduate distribution, for orientation when a syllabus is silent:

Your list minus the final here sums to 60%; the final's 40% belongs in its own field so the "what do I need" answer stays meaningful.

Mistakes that wreck the target

• Leaving the final inside the list. When the final is ungraded, 0 or a guess would poison the average. Use the separate final-weight field.
• Mixing percentages with points. "88 out of 100" under "-weight 25" is a percentage; a rubric of 22 points needs converting first.
• Entering 0.4 as a weight. The tool divides by whatever total it finds, so 0.4-style entries work only if every item uses the same scale — safer to write 40.
• Assuming a need above 100 is hopeless. Ask about extra credit; some courses allow it, some forbid it, and only your instructor's syllabus can say.
• Forgetting that an easy "need" is not a promise of an easy exam. An 80.00 target on a 20% final still hinges on exam difficulty — build in a small cushion if you can.
