Work out the hours and minutes between a start and an end time, minus a break, with decimal hours for timesheets.
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the next day.
Work out the time between a start and an end time, minus a break. Handy for timesheets, shifts and billing.
Enter the start and end times and any unpaid break in minutes. Times use your device's 24-hour or 12-hour format.
Net time = end − start − break (one day is added if the end is earlier than the start)
09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours, or 8.00 in decimal hours.
You see the net time in hours and minutes, and in decimal hours for payroll. The total span and the break are shown underneath.
Entering the break as hours. The field is in minutes, so one hour is 60.
This page answers the everyday form of "how long was that?": a start time, an end time, minus an unpaid break, with the answer in both hours-and-minutes and decimal hours. It shines where the times are not friendly round numbers and where a shift crosses midnight, which is where manual subtraction starts producing negative numbers and quiet errors.
It is deliberately a single-shift tool. Summing a week of shifts on one page is the job of the Time Card Calculator, which processes lines like this one and adds the pay if you enter a rate. Neither tool handles legal rules — overtime thresholds, minimum daily hours, rounding policies chosen by an employer — so treat those as a layer you apply afterwards with your own contract and local law.
Problem: a night shift runs 22:15 to 06:00 the next morning with a 45-minute unpaid break. How long was actually worked?
For payroll, the 7.00 is the figure the timesheet wants. If the shift had been 22:15 to 05:45 the span would be exactly one hour shorter, and the tool shows both the span and the net so you can see the break's effect line by line.
Decimal hours are minutes ÷ 60. Common values:
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
| 75 | 1.25 |
| 105 | 1.75 |
| 240 | 4.00 |
The reverse trips people up: 7.30 decimal hours is 7 h 18 m, not 7 h 30 — decimals are a fraction of an hour, not a minutes field.
The tool shows decimal hours, which are minutes ÷ 60. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75.
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the shift ends the next day.
4 hours 45 minutes — the tool reads the rollover past midnight correctly.
The span is 8 h 45 m (525 minutes); minus the 50-minute break leaves 475 minutes, i.e. 7 h 55 m, decimal 7.92.
Decimal hours, unless your employer asks for h:m. 7 h 55 m is 7.92, not 7.55.
Compute the exact net time, then round to your billing convention — the tool gives the raw figure you round from.
