Calculate a weekly total that combines regular hours and overtime at a chosen multiplier, such as time and a half. Free overtime pay calculator.
Results are gross pay, before tax and deductions.
Add regular hours and overtime hours at a chosen multiplier to see a whole week's gross pay.
Enter your hourly rate, regular hours, overtime hours and the overtime multiplier from your contract.
Total = rate × hours + rate × multiplier × overtime hours
20 per hour with 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at time and a half: 800 + 150 = 950.
You see regular pay, overtime pay, the effective overtime rate and the week's total, all before tax.
Assuming every contract pays 1.5×. Unpaid hours, shift premiums and flat-rate overtime exist; use the multiplier that actually applies.
Overtime arithmetic is simple twice over: regular pay is rate × hours, and overtime pay is rate × multiplier × overtime hours. The multiplier is where contracts differ — time-and-a-half (1.5×), double time (2×), or whatever a collective agreement states — and this page takes it as an input rather than assuming it. The output is a week's gross pay, broken into regular, overtime and total, so a payslip can be checked line by line against the contract's own arithmetic.
The panel prints the effective overtime rate too — what each overtime hour actually pays — because that rate, not the multiplier alone, is what a shift decision turns on.
Problem: a warehouse role at 20 per hour, 40 regular hours plus 5 overtime hours at time-and-a-half.
The same shape answers a second, sharper question: how much is the fifth overtime hour worth after tax? Gross arithmetic first — the tool's job — then your own marginal rate on top.
For a 25-an-hour role, the same 40-hour week with 4 overtime hours at different multipliers:
| Rate | Multiplier | OT hourly | Week total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1.5× | 37.50 | 1,150.00 |
| 25 | 2× | 50.00 | 1,200.00 |
| 28 | 1.5× (8 OT h) | 42.00 | 1,456.00 |
| 25 (no OT) | — | — | 1,000.00 |
The 28-an-hour row is a second full example: 28 × 40 = 1,120 regular, plus 8 overtime hours at 42 each = 336, total 1,456. The two multiplier rows on the same 25 rate differ by only 50 in the week — about 4% of gross pay — even though the overtime rate itself jumped by a third; contracts sometimes trade the multiplier against a plainly higher rate, and this table is how that trade gets priced.
Three clauses change the arithmetic. The threshold: some pay overtime past 8 hours in a day, others past 40 in a week — the same hours can hit one, both or neither. The multiplier's basis: holiday hours and shift premiums sometimes already carry a premium, which stacks or caps the overtime rate. And eligibility: salaried and exempt roles are often outside overtime entirely, paid the same however the week runs. This tool computes the contract arithmetic it is given; whether the contract itself applies to a given week is the sentence above the payslip.
One and a half times the hourly rate, so 20 per hour becomes 30 for each overtime hour. Some contracts pay double time or another figure.
Yes, it is gross pay. Tax, pension and other deductions come off afterwards.
At 20 an hour: 800 regular plus 150 overtime (5 × 30) = 950 for the week, before tax.
Doubling it pays 1,000 instead of 950 for that week; on a 25 rate with 4 OT hours, 2× gives 1,200 against 1,150 at 1.5×.
Gross — before tax, pension and deductions. A net-quoted side gig must be grossed up before any comparison is fair.
The threshold (some pay daily past 8 hours, others weekly past 40), the multiplier's basis, and eligibility — salaried exempt roles may have no overtime at all.
