Pick a date to see its ISO week number and where it sits in the year.
ISO weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of the year
1 January 2026 is a Thursday, so it falls in ISO week 1 of 2026.
The week number is followed by the ISO year, which can differ from the calendar year around the new year. You also see the day of the year, the quarter and the days left.
Mixing ISO weeks with weeks counted from Sunday. Some countries and apps number weeks differently.
Week numbers are how operations teams talk about time: a delivery in week 34, a sprint that starts in week 12, a payroll cut-off in week 52. This page turns any date into its ISO week number, and adds the details that usually cause the argument — the ISO year, the day of the year, the quarter and the weekday.
The ISO year matters more than it looks. The last days of December and the first days of January can belong to the neighbouring year, so a date in 2027 may legitimately be week 53 of 2026. The page shows both, which is exactly where hand-counted spreadsheets go wrong.
Under ISO 8601 a week runs from Monday to Sunday, and week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of January. Equivalently, take the Thursday of the week the date falls in: the year of that Thursday is the ISO year, and the week number is how many Mondays have passed since the Monday of week 1, plus one.
The result is always between 1 and 53. Years where 1 January falls on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year, have 53 weeks; all the others have 52.
Which week is 21 October 2026?
| Date | Week | ISO year | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January 2026 | 1 | 2026 | First week starts in December |
| 15 June 2026 | 25 | 2026 | A Monday, so the week opens |
| 21 October 2026 | 43 | 2026 | The worked example |
| 31 December 2026 | 53 | 2026 | A 53-week year |
| 1 January 2027 | 53 | 2026 | Still the previous ISO year |
The last two rows are the classic trap: the calendar has turned, but the working week has not.
An ISO week belongs to the year that contains its Thursday, so the first days of January can belong to the last week of the previous year.
No. In the US, weeks are often numbered from Sunday, so numbers can differ by one.
Week 43 of ISO 2026. It is day 294 of 365, and 42 full weeks have passed since the Monday of week 1.
In the week containing the first Thursday of January. In 2026 that week begins on Monday 29 December 2025.
Because the Thursday of that week is 31 December 2026, so the week belongs to ISO 2026, which is a 53-week year.
52 or 53. A 53rd week appears when 1 January falls on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year.
Yes, following ISO 8601. A Sunday-start convention would shift every week number by one.
