Find how many units you must sell to cover fixed costs, based on price and variable cost per unit. Free break-even calculator.
Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (selling price − variable cost per unit).
Find how many units you must sell to cover your fixed costs, based on the price and variable cost per unit.
Enter your total fixed costs, the selling price per unit and the variable cost per unit. The price must be higher than the variable cost.
Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − variable cost per unit)
Fixed costs 5,000, price 50, variable cost 30: 5,000 ÷ 20 = 250 units.
The result is the number of units you must sell to cover your costs, rounded up to a whole unit. Everything sold beyond that point is profit.
Leaving out costs you pay regardless of sales, such as software subscriptions, insurance or a market stall fee.
Break-even analysis is not about profit. It is about survival per month: how many units must go out the door so that fixed costs are covered, after which every sale keeps its contribution and starts building profit. The tool needs three honest numbers — fixed costs that repeat regardless of sales, the selling price per unit, and the variable cost that each unit itself requires (materials, transaction fees, piece-rate labour).
Be disciplined about categories. Rent, subscriptions, insurance and salaries belong to fixed costs; packaging, payment processing and unit shipping belong to the variable side. Costs that scale in steps (a second oven, extra warehouse space) are neither clean "fixed" nor "variable": model them as fixed when the step applies now, and re-run the analysis when you outgrow it. And pricing must stay pre-tax: use the net price, since VAT or sales tax collected for the treasury is never your revenue.
Problem: a workshop produces handmade lights. Fixed monthly costs are 8,400. Each light sells for 24.50; materials and per-unit costs total 17.00.
Every light beyond 1,120 adds 7.50 of profit before other considerations, which is the number that makes scaling conversations concrete.
| Units per month | Monthly result |
|---|---|
| 800 | −2,400.00 |
| 1,120 (break-even) | 0.00 |
| 1,400 | +2,100.00 |
At 800 the workshop loses exactly 280 units × 7.50; at 1,400 it gains precisely 280 units × 7.50. Volume moves the result linearly once the fixed block is defined.
Fixed costs, such as rent, stay the same regardless of sales; variable costs, such as materials, rise with each unit sold.
You cannot sell part of a unit, so the calculator rounds up to the next whole unit.
The contribution is 34.90 − 12.40 = 22.50 per unit; 5,600 ÷ 22.50 = 248.9, so 249 units cover the month.
6,300 ÷ 9.00 = 700 units — the direct division when the contribution is already known.
The contribution falls by the same amount: in the lamps example from 7.50 to 6.30, and break-even climbs from 1,120 to 1,334 units.
Exactly the contribution per unit, unchanged — 7.50 in the lamps example — until another cost step (staff, space, materials) kicks in.
