Average = sum of the values ÷ how many values
12, 18, 25 and 30 add up to 85; 85 ÷ 4 = 21.25.
The average is the sum divided by the count. The detail line also shows how many numbers were read, which is a quick way to spot a value that was skipped by mistake.
Trusting the mean when one value is extreme. A single outlier can pull the average far from the typical value. In that case use the Statistics Calculator to compare mean and median.
This page computes the arithmetic mean: add every value, divide by how many there are. That single number is the correct summary whenever the list is fairly balanced; it distorts everything when one entry is far from the rest. The calculator shows the sum and the count alongside the mean precisely so you can audit those two inputs — most "wrong average" incidents are actually a wrong count, a pasted header line, or a 0 that stands in for "not measured yet".
When should you reach for something else? If the spread matters, the Statistics Calculator reports median, mode, range and standard deviation next to the mean. If the values carry different importance, a weighted mean is what you want — course marks are the classic case, and the Weighted Grade Calculator handles them directly. And if you just need the numbers tidied (GCD, LCM) rather than averaged, the GCD & LCM Calculator is the neighbour for that.
Problem: six van deliveries took 6, 6, 6.5, 7, 7 and 11 hours. What is the average delivery time?
Skip the 11-hour leg and the mean becomes (6 + 6 + 6.5 + 7 + 7) ÷ 5 = 6.5 — a 45-minute difference produced by one row. That is the honest reason the count field matters: it tells you exactly which rows you are asking the average to absorb.
| List | Mean | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 12, 19, 7, 21, 11 | 14 | sum 70 over five values |
| 3.5, 4, 2.5, 5, 3.5 | 3.7 | decimals welcome |
| 6, 6, 6.5, 7, 7, 11 | 7.25 | median 6.75, mean pulled up by 11 |
| 6, 6, 6.5, 7, 7 | 6.5 | outlier removed |
| −4, 0, 4 | 0 | negatives cancel positives |
| 10, 10, 10 | 10 | zero spread, all values equal |
The −4, 0, 4 row is a quiet warning: a mean near zero can hide a wide spread, which is why the range read-out in the Statistics Calculator belongs in the same conversation.
Treat the mean as an opening statement and keep the count in the same sentence: "averaging 7.25 hours over six deliveries" carries planning weight, while "7.25 hours" alone can be six lucky ones or one unlucky outlier's drag. The calculator's detail line keeps the sum and count beside the result precisely so that both halves of the message — the load and the volume — travel together. When the list is coarse (whole hours), reporting one decimal suggests a precision your inputs lack; round to the unit the data genuinely supports, and let the spread, available through the Statistics Calculator, do the honest talking.
Reading capacity out of the same list is often the more operational question: the sum here (44.5 across six vans) is what a fleet needs to resource, while the mean is what a single day "usually" feels like. Both figures stay available from the same page, so choose the one who is asking: operations want the sum, service-level meetings want the mean, and a grievance usually needs the median — which lives next door in the statistics tool.
The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle value of the sorted list. The Statistics Calculator shows both.
Yes, negative and decimal numbers are supported.
Yes: the sum is 70 over five values, so the average is exactly 14.
Each row weighs the same, so a single 11-hour delivery in a list of six-to-seven hour ones lifted the mean from 6.5 to 7.25 — the outlier is not an error, it is information.
No. Addition is commutative, so any order produces the same mean; order matters only for medians.
