Convert numbers from 1 to 3999 into Roman numerals, or read a Roman numeral as a number. Free and instant.
Enter a number from 1 to 3999 or a Roman numeral.
Convert numbers from 1 to 3,999 into Roman numerals, or read a Roman numeral back as a number.
Type a number from 1 to 3999 and you get its Roman numeral. Type a Roman numeral and you get the number.
Add symbol values (M 1,000, D 500, C 100, L 50, X 10, V 5, I 1), using subtraction for IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM
2026 = MM + XX + VI = MMXXVI.
The result is the standard form. Invalid patterns such as IIII or VX are rejected because they are not standard Roman numerals.
Trusting a numeral you wrote by hand. Common slips include IIII for 4 and VX for 5.
Roman numerals survive in the places where a plain number would look out of place: clock faces, chapter headings, film credits, monument inscriptions, tattoo sketches and the copyright year at the end of a television programme. They also appear in older documents and on buildings, where reading them is the actual task.
This converter works in both directions, from 1 to 3999. Type a number and it produces the numeral; type a numeral and it returns the number. Anything outside that range, or any pattern that is not standard notation, is rejected instead of being silently "fixed".
The seven symbols are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. The tool takes the largest symbol that fits, subtracts it and repeats, including the six subtractive pairs: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400 and CM = 900. That greedy pass is exactly how standard numerals are built.
Reading works symbol by symbol, adding each value, and the tool then converts the answer back to check the round trip. If the two do not match, the numeral was not standard: IIII becomes 4 numerically but converts back as IV, so it is refused.
Write 2026 in Roman numerals.
| Number | Numeral | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | IV | One before five |
| 9 | IX | One before ten |
| 14 | XIV | Ten plus four |
| 40 | XL | Ten before fifty |
| 90 | XC | Ten before a hundred |
| 1994 | MCMXCIV | M + CM + XC + IV |
| 2026 | MMXXVI | The worked example |
| 3999 | MMMCMXCIX | The largest supported value |
Only six subtractive pairs exist. Writing 8 as IIX, or 45 as VL, is not a stylistic choice: it is a different, non-standard number.
Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M and repeat a symbol at most three times, so the largest value is MMMCMXCIX (3,999).
No. The Romans had no symbol for zero.
MMXXVI: M + M for 2000, X + X for 20 and V + I for 6. Add the values and you are back at 2026.
3999, the largest value the tool accepts: 3000 + 900 + 90 + 9.
MCMXCIV: 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4. Each of the three subtractive pairs appears once.
Standard notation writes four as one before five. IIII appears on some clock faces, but the tool rejects it as non-standard.
No. The page covers 1 to 3999, because there is no standard single-letter symbol for 5000 in this notation.
