Convert points earned out of points possible into a percentage, with the missed points shown. Free test score percentage calculator.
Use the same point scale for both fields.
Convert points earned out of points possible into a percentage, and see how many points were missed.
Enter points earned and points possible on the same scale.
Percentage = earned ÷ possible × 100
47 out of 60 points is 78.33%, with 13 points missed.
You get the percentage and the points missed, which is often the faster figure to communicate.
Dividing by the wrong total, for example using the class maximum instead of the paper's maximum.
Tests, rubrics and quizzes record success in points, but people compare in percentages: 47 out of 60 means more as 78.33% than either raw number does alone, and 30 out of 42 on a second paper is hard to place without the same normalisation. This page performs the division — earned ÷ possible × 100 — and prints the missed points underneath, which is often the faster figure to talk about ("lost 13" travels further than "78.33% with unknown losts").
The tool keeps the scale honest rather than clever: both fields must use the same point scale, partial credit is allowed as a decimal part of a point, and letter grades are deliberately absent because cut-offs differ between schools, exam boards and countries.
Problem: a rubric awarded 47 of 60 points; a second paper awarded 30 of 42. How do the two really compare?
The missed-points line does quiet work beside the headline: two papers can share a percentage while losing very different point counts, and recovery plans are written in points, not in percentages.
| Earned | Possible | Percentage | Missed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 47 | 60 | 78.33% | 13 |
| 30 | 42 | 71.43% | 12 |
| 8 | 10 | 80% | 2 |
| 150 | 200 | 75% | 50 |
| 95 | 100 | 95% | 5 |
The middle rows are the honest surprises: 8 of 10 and 150 of 200 are both "75–80%" results with wildly different absolute losses, and a percentage without its missed line hides exactly the difference a study plan needs.
Practice-test tracking is the classic use: ten papers of different lengths tell their story only through percentages, and a series of them — 71.43%, 78.33%, 80% — reads as progress on one axis. Rubric summaries use the same division when criteria carry different point weights, and teachers comparing two classes on different papers reach for it for the same reason. In every case the pattern holds: keep the raw counts, divide once, and quote the percentage with its missed-points partner so the number stays auditable.
Yes. Enter the decimal or fractional total points you actually earned, as long as both fields use the same scale.
No. Grading bands differ between schools and exam boards, so interpret the percentage against your own syllabus.
78.33%, with 13 points missed — one division, displayed to two decimals.
71.43%, with twelve missed; despite the smaller raw numbers it is the weaker paper by nearly 7 percentage points.
Yes — decimals such as 30.5 of 42 give 72.62%, provided both fields use the same point scale.
Cut-offs differ between schools and exam boards; importing letters would attach one institution's curve to another's paper.
