Work out the fuel cost of a trip from distance, consumption and price per litre, with a round-trip option. Free fuel cost calculator.
Consumption in litres per 100 km; price is per litre.
Work out what fuel a trip costs: distance, your car's litres per 100 km and the price at the pump, with a one-click round trip.
Enter the distance in kilometres, the consumption in litres per 100 km and the pump price, then pick one way or round trip.
Cost = distance × consumption ÷ 100 × price per litre
A 450 km trip at 6.2 L/100 km and 1.85 per litre costs about 51.62 one way.
The headline is the fuel cost, with litres needed and cost per kilometre underneath, plus a yearly figure if the trip repeats twice a week.
Using the motorway consumption number for city driving, or the reverse: the traffic mix changes the result.
Fuel is the most visible cost of a journey and the easiest to underestimate, because the figure on the dashboard is an average and the pump price changes weekly. This page multiplies distance, consumption and price into the cost of one trip, and doubles the distance when you choose the round trip.
Use it to split a holiday drive, to compare driving with a train ticket, or to see what a change of commute does to a monthly budget. The result is fuel only: tolls, parking, wear and depreciation are separate costs.
Litres = distance × consumption ÷ 100. Cost = litres × price per litre. The round-trip option doubles the distance before the calculation, and the yearly line multiplies the one-way cost by 104, which is two trips a week for a year.
Cost per kilometre is consumption ÷ 100 × price, a figure that stays constant whatever the distance. That is why it is the number worth remembering: at 6.2 L/100 km and 1.85 per litre, every kilometre costs about 0.11.
450 km at 6.2 L/100 km, with fuel at 1.85 per litre.
The yearly figure is the one that changes decisions: a daily commute that costs 10 a day is more than 2,500 a year.
| Distance | Consumption | Price | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 km | 6.2 L/100 km | 1.85 | 11.47 |
| 450 km | 6.2 L/100 km | 1.85 | 51.62 |
| 450 km each way | 6.2 L/100 km | 1.85 | 103.23 |
| 450 km | 5.0 L/100 km | 1.85 | 41.63 |
| 450 km | 8.0 L/100 km | 1.85 | 66.60 |
The last two rows are the same journey in an efficient and a thirsty car: a difference of 25 on a single trip, and about 2,600 over a year of twice-weekly drives.
Air conditioning, traffic, load, roof racks and cold starts push consumption above any figure on paper.

No, this tool uses litres per 100 km. Convert an mpg figure first with the Fuel Economy Converter.
51.62: 450 × 6.2 ÷ 100 = 27.9 litres, and 27.9 × 1.85 = 51.62.
103.23, from 900 km and 55.8 litres. Forgetting the return leg is the classic error.
About 0.11, from 6.2 ÷ 100 × 1.85. It stays constant whatever the distance.
5,367.96: 51.62 × 104 trips. The yearly line only appears for a one-way trip.
No. It is fuel only; tolls, parking, tyres and depreciation are separate.
