Convert whole numbers between decimal, binary, octal and hexadecimal. Useful for programming and electronics.
Choose the base of the number you type.
Convert whole numbers between decimal, binary, octal and hexadecimal. Useful for programming, networking and electronics.
Type a number, choose the base it is written in and read the other bases in the result.
Value = Σ(digit × base^position)
255 in decimal is 11111111 in binary, 377 in octal and FF in hexadecimal.
You get the decimal value first, then the binary, octal and hexadecimal forms. Hexadecimal letters are shown in capitals.
Typing a digit that does not exist in the chosen base, such as 2 in binary or G in hexadecimal.
Every programmer meets the same three bases within a week of starting: binary for bit masks, hexadecimal for colour codes and memory addresses, octal in file permissions and a few legacy formats. This page converts a number between those three and decimal, and shows all four forms at once so you can check a value without switching tools.
It is equally useful in the other direction: a homework exercise asking for 255 in binary, or a colour code that needs to become three decimal channel values.
Place value: each digit is multiplied by the base raised to its position, counting from zero on the right. In base 16 the letters A to F stand for 10 to 15. The tool validates every character against the base you chose, so a 2 in binary or a G in hexadecimal is refused before any arithmetic happens.
Going the other way, the decimal value is divided repeatedly by the target base and the remainders are read bottom to top. That is how 255 becomes FF: 255 ÷ 16 = 15 remainder 15, and 15 is F in both positions.
Convert 255 from decimal, the default on the page.
| Decimal | Binary | Octal | Hex |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1010 | 12 | A |
| 16 | 10000 | 20 | 10 |
| 255 | 11111111 | 377 | FF |
| 1,000 | 1111101000 | 1750 | 3E8 |
| 4,095 | 111111111111 | 7777 | FFF |
The last row is the largest value that fits in twelve bits, which is why 4,095 keeps appearing in memory and graphics work.
One hex digit stands for exactly four binary digits, so long binary values become short and readable.
No. ff and FF are the same hexadecimal value.
255: 15 × 16 + 15. The letters A to F stand for 10 to 15.
11111111, which is 128 + 64 + 32 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1.
10 in decimal: 8 + 2, reading the four bits from the left as 8, 4, 2 and 1.
Because the base is sixteen: 1 × 16 + 0 = 16. The same digits mean different things in each base.
FFF, and 7777 in octal. It is the largest value that fits in twelve binary digits.
