Words are groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks
The sentence Numora makes everyday maths simple has 5 words.
You see words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time based on about 238 words per minute.
Relying on the sentence count for text without normal punctuation, such as lists or headings. It is an approximation.
Word counts exist to make limits comparable. An essay brief, a freelance quote per 1,000 words, a chapter budget, a translation estimate — all rely on the same definition: words are the stretches of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. This counter applies that definition and shows characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time alongside, because different limits quote different units.
Where it falls short: it does not parse grammar, so a sentence counter reading an all-caps text or a bullet list is an approximation, and reading time assumes an average adult pace of about 238 words per minute — slower for dense technical material, faster for light fiction. It is analysing text for humans, not linguistics.
Take the sentence: "A good counter saves you editing time."
The same count rules scale to a thesis or a novel, which is the point: one definition, applied mechanically, so two people counting the same text agree.
Figure for 2026; platforms adjust from time to time:
| Limited field | Typical limit |
|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters |
| Single SMS | 160 characters |
| Meta description snippet | about 155 characters before truncation |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters |
| YouTube video title | 100 characters |
| LinkedIn post | about 3,000 characters |
Note that most of these are character limits, not word limits — which is why the character figures matter even for people who "just write".
No. The counting happens in your browser and your text is not sent to our server.
It assumes an average adult reading speed of about 238 words per minute.
The tool assumes about 238 words per minute, so 1,300 words take a little over five minutes (1,300 ÷ 238 ≈ 5.46).
It depends on layout: about 5 pages at 500 words per page, or 10 pages at 250. Spacing and font decide, not the counter.
Any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word, so well-known is counted once.
Editors may include or exclude trailing line breaks and line endings; the page counts exactly the text as you paste it.
