Project a savings balance from a starting amount, monthly deposits, an annual return and time. Includes a year-by-year table.
Deposits are added monthly; the return compounds monthly.
Project how a savings balance grows from a starting amount plus a fixed monthly deposit, earning a rate that compounds monthly.
Enter the starting balance, the monthly deposit, an annual return and the number of years.
Balance = start × (1 + r)^n + deposit × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r, with monthly rate r over n months
1,000 at the start plus 200 a month for 5 years at 4% grows to about 14,480.79, of which 1,480.79 is interest.
The headline is the projected balance and the table shows the balance and interest at the end of each year, so you can watch deposits compound.
Trusting one rate as certain. Run a low and a high rate to see the realistic span.
Regular saving is a slow, boring, extremely effective habit, and this page makes the slowness visible: a starting balance, a monthly deposit and a return, projected year by year. It answers questions like how much a deposit fund will hold in five years, or what a small monthly transfer is really worth over a decade.
The figures are nominal: before tax, before fees, and before inflation. Treat the rate as a scenario, not a promise, and run a low and a high version to see the range you should plan around.
Balance = start × (1 + r)^n + deposit × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r. Here r is the annual return divided by 1,200 and n is the number of months. The first term grows the opening balance; the second is the future value of an ordinary annuity, because each deposit is made at the end of its month and therefore earns one month less interest than the balance before it.
With a zero return the second term collapses to deposit × n, which is exactly what you paid in. The detail line always shows the total contributed and the interest as separate numbers.
1,000 to start, 200 a month, 4% a year, for five years.
You paid in 13,000 and earned 1,480.79. Five years is short: most of the growth still comes from the deposits, not from the return.
| Year | Balance | Interest so far |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3,485.23 | 85.23 |
| 2 | 6,071.72 | 271.72 |
| 3 | 8,763.58 | 563.58 |
| 4 | 11,565.12 | 965.12 |
| 5 | 14,480.79 | 1,480.79 |
The interest column grows faster than the balance: in year one it is 85, in year five the year alone adds over 500. That acceleration is the whole argument for starting early.
At the end of each month. Depositing at the start would earn about one extra month of interest.
Real returns vary. Run a low and a high rate to see a range instead of one number.
No. The result is nominal: before tax and before any loss of purchasing power.
14,480.79, of which 13,000 is money you paid in and 1,480.79 is interest.
1,480.79. In the first year it is 85.23; by the fifth the year adds over 500.
51,925.44, because both the deposit and the rate are higher and the horizon is twice as long.
The balance is simply the start plus deposits × months: 1,000 + 200 × 60 = 13,000.
At the end, so each one earns one month less interest than the balance before it.
