Estimate how an investment grows with compound interest. Set the starting amount, rate, years and compounding frequency.
Assumes a fixed annual rate and compounding frequency; excludes taxes and fees.
Estimate how an investment grows with compound interest, where earned interest is added to the balance and earns interest itself. Set the starting amount, annual rate, years and compounding frequency.
Enter your starting amount, the expected annual interest rate, the number of years and how often interest is added each year (12 for monthly, 1 for yearly). The table below the result shows year-by-year growth.
Final amount = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^(n × t)
1,000 at 5% for 10 years, compounded monthly, grows to about 1,647.01.
The main figure is the estimated final balance. The year-by-year table shows how the growth accelerates in later years, which is the real power of compounding.
Treating the result as a promise. Real returns change from year to year, and taxes, fees and inflation reduce what you actually keep.
This page assumes a clean textbook situation: a lump sum, a fixed annual rate, no extra deposits, no fees and no taxes. That is the right model for answering "what would a fixed-rate product do with this money?", for teaching how growth accelerates, and for comparing quoted products on equal terms. Its year-by-year table is deliberately unsentimental about the boring middle years, where compounding feels slow before it becomes impressive.
Do not use it directly when money is added monthly — deposits change every month's balance, and the correct home for that is the Savings Growth Calculator. Variable or volatile returns need scenario thinking, not a single fixed-rate projection: run a conservative, an expected and an optimistic rate through this calculator and plan for the conservative one. And remember every figure below is nominal money — inflation quietly reduces what it buys, which the Inflation Calculator quantifies.
Problem: 5,000 invested at 7% a year, compounded monthly, for 12 years — no deposits.
The doubling is the story: money growing at a steady 7% roughly doubles every 10.2 years, so two doublings plus drift take a 12-year window from 1× to about 2.31×.
| Years | Balance | Interest so far |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 7,088.13 | 2,088.13 |
| 10 | 10,048.31 | 5,048.31 |
| 15 | 14,244.73 | 9,244.73 |
| 20 | 20,193.69 | 15,193.69 |
Read the balance column against the interest column: by year 15 the interest, not the deposit, is the majority of the balance. That crossover is compounding's core idea.
No. It is an illustration with a fixed rate and no extra deposits, so real results will differ.
More frequent compounding gives a slightly higher result at the same annual rate.
2,000 × 1.05^8 = 2,954.91, of which 954.91 is interest.
The rule of 72 says 72 ÷ 4 = 18 years; the exact figure solves 1.04^t = 2 at about 17.7 years.
(1 + 0.06 ÷ 12)^12 − 1 = 6.17%. The nominal 6% and the effective 6.17% are different numbers.
Yearly ends at about 5,372.54, monthly at about 5,458.19 — a difference of 85.65 for nothing more than compounding twelve times a year.
