Estimate body mass index from weight in kilograms and height in centimetres. A screening tool, not a medical diagnosis.
BMI is a screening measure and does not diagnose health conditions.
Estimate body mass index from weight in kilograms and height in centimetres. BMI is a simple screening number, not a diagnosis of health.
Enter your weight in kilograms and your height in centimetres. For pounds and inches use the imperial version of this tool.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
80 kg at 180 cm: 80 ÷ 1.80² ≈ 24.7.
The number is placed into a general adult range. It is a quick screening figure and does not measure body fat, muscle or fitness.
Using BMI for children, pregnant women, or very muscular people. In these cases it can be misleading, and a health professional is the right source of advice.
BMI earns its place as the most common screening number because it needs only a tape and a scale and it works for large averages. Use it as a trend line: the direction of your own BMI across months says more than one reading. It is also a shared language doctors and insurers understand, which is why forms ask for it.
Be sceptical in four situations. Children and teens grow into their numbers and use age-adjusted percentile charts, not adult bands. Athletic builds carry dense muscle that tips BMI high without excess fat. Older adults lose muscle as they age, so a "normal" BMI can hide reduced reserves. Pregnancy changes weight by design, making the pre-pregnancy BMI the relevant one. In all four cases a professional adds context: waist circumference, body fat percentage from the Body Fat Estimate, or simply clinical judgement.
Someone weighs 68 kg and is 172 cm tall:
Notice how much the squaring matters: a 9% taller person at the same weight already shows a 17% lower BMI. Size, not just weight, drives the number.
Standard adult cut-off points, converted to kilograms at this height:
| BMI cut-off | Weight at 1.70 m |
|---|---|
| 18.5 (underweight threshold) | about 53.5 kg |
| 25 (overweight threshold) | about 72.3 kg |
| 30 (obesity threshold) | about 86.7 kg |
| 40 (class III) | about 115.6 kg |
The same bands scale with height squared, which is exactly what the calculator does for you.
Commonly used adult ranges are under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or above obesity.
No. It does not distinguish muscle from fat and is less suitable for children, athletes and some groups. Ask a health professional for advice.
66 ÷ 1.70² ≈ 22.8 — comfortably inside the normal range.
27.4 × 1.80² ≈ 88.8 kg. BMI works in both directions, since it is just weight divided by squared height.
Child and teen BMI is read against age and sex percentile charts, not the fixed adult ranges, so this page is not the right reference for anyone under 18.
The number is still weight ÷ height², but it loses its usual meaning during pregnancy, so it is not interpreted against the standard ranges.
