Find how many months it takes to pay a card balance at a fixed monthly payment, and how much interest that costs. Free calculator.
Interest is added monthly on the remaining balance.
See how long a credit card balance takes to clear at a fixed monthly payment, and how much interest that route costs.
Enter the balance, the card's annual rate and the monthly payment you plan to make.
Each month interest = balance × APR ÷ 12; the remainder of the payment reduces the balance
A 5,000 balance at 18% cleared with 150 a month takes 47 payments, about 1,983.60 of interest.
You get the number of payments, the total paid and the interest portion. The alert line appears when a payment cannot beat the monthly interest.
Assuming the rate never changes. If your APR moves, rerun the calculation.
A credit card balance is a small loan with an unusually high rate, and the monthly statement hides how long it will last. This page takes the balance, the annual rate and the payment you intend to make, and returns the number of months, the total paid and the interest inside that total.
It is the tool for deciding which card to attack first, for setting a payment that clears a balance by a chosen month, and for seeing what a minimum-style payment really costs. It assumes the card is not used again and the rate never changes, so treat the result as an estimate rather than a promise. The card issuer sets the real rate, the minimum payment and any fees, and their terms and decision are the ones that count.
Each month the card charges interest of balance × APR ÷ 12. Your payment clears that interest first, and only the remainder reduces the capital. The loop repeats until the balance reaches zero, capped at 1,200 months.
That order is why a small payment can stall: at 18% on 5,000 the monthly interest is 75.00, so a payment of 75 leaves the balance untouched forever. The page refuses a payment at or below that line and tells you the figure it must beat.
5,000 at 18% with a payment of 150 a month.
| Monthly payment | Payments | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 94 | 4,311.18 |
| 150 | 47 | 1,983.60 |
| 200 | 32 | 1,313.96 |
| 250 | 24 | 989.13 |
| 300 | 20 | 797.17 |
All on the same 5,000 at 18%. Tripling the payment from 100 to 300 cuts the months from 94 to 20 and the interest by more than 3,500 — the relationship is nowhere near linear.
Interest is added every month. A payment below that month's interest lets the balance grow instead of shrink.
The payoff month drops sharply. Try a few figures and compare the months and interest.
Yes. New spending and fees are not modelled.
47 payments, with 6,983.60 paid in total and 1,983.60 of interest.
20 payments and 797.17 of interest: 5,797.17 in total, a saving of 1,186.43 against the 150 plan.
Anything above the monthly interest. At 18% on 5,000 that is 75.00, so 75 stalls forever and 76 barely moves.
Because more of each payment reaches the capital, so later interest is charged on a smaller balance.
No. The estimate freezes the card and the rate; any new purchase or rate change restarts the calculation.
