When to use it

Odds are the language of betting, and they hide probability in a form that is easy to misread. "Three to one" sounds like a 3% chance to some people and a 300% chance to others; it is neither. This page converts odds written as "a to b" into a plain percentage, the chance against, and the fair return per unit staked.

Understanding the conversion is the point. A payout that looks generous often reflects a low probability, and the gap between the fair return and the offered one is where the operator's margin lives. No tool changes that arithmetic, and no system beats the house over time.

How the maths works

If the odds are a to b in favour, there are a winning cases for every b losing cases, so the probability of winning is a ÷ (a + b). The fair return per unit staked is (a + b) ÷ a, because a fair payout gives back the stake plus the winnings in proportion to the risk.

Both fields accept zero, but not both at once. With a zero chance of winning there is no fair payout to compute, and the page says so rather than dividing by zero.

A worked example

Odds of 1 to 4 in favour.

1. Total cases: 1 + 4 = 5.
2. Chance of winning: 1 ÷ 5 = 20%.
3. Chance of losing: 4 ÷ 5 = 80%.
4. Fair return per unit: 5 ÷ 1 = 5 to 1, meaning 5.00 back for every 1.00 staked.

Change the words to "4 to 1 against" and the same event becomes 4 losing cases for every winner — which in this tool is written as 1 to 4 in favour.

Odds to chance

Notice that the fair return falls as the chance rises: a near-certainty pays almost nothing, because there is almost no risk to compensate.

Common mistakes

• Mixing in favour and against. Bookmaker fractional odds such as 4/1 are usually against, meaning one win in five, not four in five.
• Reading 3 to 1 as 3%. It is 75%; the two numbers are cases, not percentages.
• Expecting the fair return. Real payouts sit below it; the difference is the margin that keeps the operator in business.
• Believing in a system. Each bet is priced against you, so repeated play tends to lose. No tool beats the house.
