Estimate the daily, monthly and yearly cost of running any appliance from its power in watts, hours of use and your price per kWh.
Enter watts, hours per day and the price per kWh from your bill.
Estimate what an appliance costs to run. Enter its power in watts, how many hours you use it each day and the price you pay per kilowatt-hour on your electricity bill.
Enter the power of the appliance in watts, the hours you run it per day and your price per kWh. The price is on your bill, usually in the tariff section.
Daily kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000; cost = kWh × price per kWh
A 150 W device used 8 hours a day uses 1.2 kWh a day. At 0.30 per kWh that is 0.36 per day, or about 10.80 over 30 days.
The headline is the cost over 30 days. The detail lines show daily energy, daily cost and the yearly total, so you can compare appliances on the same basis.
Using the maximum wattage for a device that cycles on and off. A fridge compressor, for example, runs only part of the time.
Every appliance is a small subscription paid through the meter: a fridge that runs all day, a heater that runs for three hours, a console left on overnight. This page turns watts and hours into money, so replacing an old appliance stops being a guess and becomes a comparison.
It estimates running cost, not the whole bill. Standing charges, taxes and tiered tariffs sit outside the calculation, so read the figure as that appliance's share of the bill.
Energy per day = watts × hours ÷ 1,000, in kilowatt-hours. Cost per day = kWh × price per kWh. The headline multiplies the daily cost by 30; the detail lines add the 365-day cost and the yearly energy. Watts are the rating on the label; if only amps are printed, watts = volts × amps.
Most appliances cycle, so their average draw is below the label figure: a fridge compressor switches on and off, and a laptop idles far below its charger's rating. For those, either measure the real consumption or treat the result as an upper bound.
A 150 W appliance runs 8 hours a day at 0.30 per kWh, the defaults on the page.
| Appliance | Power | Hours/day | kWh/day | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LED bulb | 10 W | 5 | 0.05 | 0.45 |
| Laptop | 60 W | 6 | 0.36 | 3.24 |
| Fridge | 150 W | 8 | 1.20 | 10.80 |
| Iron | 1,500 W | 1 | 1.50 | 13.50 |
| Fan heater | 2,000 W | 3 | 6.00 | 54.00 |
All at 0.30 per kWh. The heater costs twelve times the fridge for a third of the hours: power matters more than time in this arithmetic.
Look at the label on the appliance or its charger. Many devices draw less than the maximum most of the time.
Standing charges, taxes and variable power use are not included in this estimate.
6 kWh a day, so 1.50 daily and 45.00 over 30 days: 2,000 × 3 ÷ 1,000 = 6 kWh, then 6 × 0.25 = 1.50.
10.80 over 30 days. That is 1.2 kWh a day at 0.36, which reaches 131.40 over a year.
0.30: divide the amount by the energy, 90 ÷ 300 = 0.30. Use the total including taxes for a realistic figure.
Exactly 24 kWh: watts × hours ÷ 1,000. At 0.30 that single day costs 7.20.
It can. A 5 W standby for 24 hours is 0.12 kWh a day, about 1.08 over 30 days at 0.30 — small alone, noticeable across the house.
