Work out the sale price and how much you save after a percentage discount. Free online discount calculator.
Subtract the discount amount from the original price.
See the sale price and your savings after a percentage discount. Enter the original price and the discount rate to compare deals while you shop.
Enter the full price and the advertised discount percentage. You instantly see the final price and the amount saved, which is useful before you reach the till.
Sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100)
20% off 100 = 100 × 0.80 = 80, so you save 20.
The main figure is what you will actually pay. The detail line shows the saving in money, so you can judge whether a '30% off' sticker is worth the effort in real terms.
Adding two discounts together. 20% off followed by another 10% is 28% in total because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Run the calculator twice to see the true figure.
One discount, one price, one answer: this page is settled maths for the standard sale sticker — 30% off a jacket, 15% off a course fee, 20% off a subscription. It converts what feels like a saving into exact money, which is where the shopping decision really happens: 40.50 off 135 feels abstract; walking out paying 94.50 does not.
Use additional tools when the offer is not single. Two stacked discounts must be applied one after the other (see below — they multiply, they do not add). "Buy one get one half price" is a 25% discount only when the two items cost the same. And a "free gift worth X" needs your honest value judgement, not a calculator. The original price matters too: if a shop quietly raised the pre-sale price a week before, no arithmetic can rescue the deal — that is a data question, and price-tracking history is the antidote.
Problem: a jacket costs 135 with 30% off today; the till adds a loyalty extra of 10% more off. What do you really pay?
Order does not matter with two multipliers, but the identity does: discounts compound on whatever base they find, which is why "30% + 10%" is never 40%.
| Discount | You pay | You save |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 108.00 | 12.00 |
| 15% | 102.00 | 18.00 |
| 20% | 96.00 | 24.00 |
| 25% | 90.00 | 30.00 |
| 30% | 84.00 | 36.00 |
| 40% | 72.00 | 48.00 |
Notice each saving is exactly its discount rate of the original price — the saving column grows linearly even though the paid column does not.
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A price of 80 after 20% off was 100 before.
Not exactly. 20% off followed by 10% off equals 28% in total, not 30%, because the second applies to the reduced price.
1 − 0.85 × 0.88 = 25.2%, not 27%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
84 × 0.85 = 71.40, a saving of 12.60.
136 ÷ 0.80 = 170. To reverse a discount, divide by the multiplier instead of adding the percentage back.
90 × 0.60 = 54, then 54 × 0.75 = 40.50. That is 55% off the original — not 65%.
