Calculate the probability of a single event and the chance of at least one success over independent attempts. Free probability calculator.
Enter favorable and total outcomes of a single trial.
Get the probability of a single outcome, the odds against it, and the chance of at least one success over a number of independent attempts.
Enter the favourable outcomes, the total possible outcomes and how many independent attempts you plan to make.
p = favorable ÷ total; at least one success in k attempts = 1 − (1 − p)^k
Rolling 7 with two dice has 6 favourable of 36 outcomes, so p = 16.67%. Across 3 attempts, at least one success is about 42.13%.
First you get the single-trial probability, then the odds against it, then the chance of at least one success across your attempts.
Using the at-least-one formula when attempts are linked, such as drawing cards without replacement.
Probability is the arithmetic of uncertainty, and the practical version has two parts: how likely one attempt is, and how likely at least one success is across several attempts. Dice and card games are the obvious cases; sales calls, quality sampling, email replies and repeated tests follow the same logic.
The multi-attempt figure assumes each try is independent and identical, which is true for dice and false for drawing cards without replacement. Getting that assumption wrong is the most common way these numbers mislead.
Single attempt: p = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes, printed as a percentage with four decimals. Odds against are total ÷ favourable, expressed as "about 18 to 1".
At least one success in k attempts: 1 − (1 − p)^k. The bracket is the chance of failing every time, so subtracting it from one leaves the chance of at least one success. Note what is missing: the formula never predicts exactly one success, only one or more.
Rolling a total of 7 with two dice: 6 favourable outcomes out of 36.
| Single chance | Attempts | At least one |
|---|---|---|
| 16.6667% (one on a die) | 3 | 42.1296% |
| 16.6667% (one on a die) | 6 | 66.5102% |
| 16.6667% (one on a die) | 12 | 88.7843% |
| 50% (a coin) | 3 | 87.5% |
| 5.5556% (a seven) | 10 | 43.537% |
Check the first row: 1 − (5/6)^3 = 1 − 0.5787 = 0.4213. Doubling the attempts never doubles the chance; it closes the gap to certainty more and more slowly.
The multi-attempt formula assumes every attempt has the same probability and does not change the others.
No. Exactly-k questions need the binomial distribution, which this simple tool does not include.
No. A result above 100% always means an input is wrong.
5.5556%, from 6 favourable outcomes out of 36. Odds against are about 6 to 1 as the page reports them.
66.5102%, from 1 − (5/6)^6 = 1 − 0.334898.
43.537%, from 1 − 0.944444^10.
Because failures multiply: (5/6)^6 is still 33.49%, so a third of the time nothing lands.
No. Each draw changes the remaining deck, so attempts are dependent and the formula does not apply.
